Durgin Covered Bridge Sandwich NH

Norma Karle

Covered Bridges are a New England favorite.  This is the perfect year to seek them out, drive them and explore the area.  Plenty of social distancing is involved.  This is the Durgin Covered Bridge in North Sandwich NH.  It was first built in 1820 and spans the Cold River.  The historical market indicates freshets in 1844, 1865 and 1869 destroyed the bridge three times.  What the heck is a freshet?  I had to look it up, it’s a spring thaw of snow and ice melt.  It’s named for a grist mill owner James Holmes Durgin, who drove a stage coach from Sandwich to Farmington.  According to local history this was a link in the underground slave railroad.    Since you're in the area – take a look at the “Great Wall of Sandwich” with it’s statue of Niobe located on Little Pond Road in Sandwich.
